Key Concepts

Nonlinear Editing (NLE)

A method of video editing where footage can be accessed and rearranged in any order on a digital timeline without altering the original source files, allowing for nondestructive and flexible workflows.

Example: An editor using Adobe Premiere Pro can drag clips to any position on the timeline, trim them, add transitions, and undo changes without affecting the original footage files on disk.

Cut and Transition Types

The various methods of moving from one shot to another, including hard cuts (instant switch), dissolves (gradual blend), wipes, fades, and other transitions that convey meaning about time, location, or mood changes.

Example: A fade to black at the end of a scene signals the passage of time or the conclusion of a chapter, while a jump cut within a YouTube vlog creates an energetic, fast-paced feel.

Color Correction and Grading

Color correction normalizes footage to accurate, consistent colors across shots, while color grading applies stylistic color treatments to establish mood, tone, or visual identity for the project.

Example: A filmmaker corrects white balance inconsistencies between indoor and outdoor shots, then applies a warm orange-and-teal grade to give the film a cinematic, blockbuster look.

Audio Mixing and Sound Design

The process of balancing, enhancing, and layering dialogue, music, sound effects, and ambient audio to create a cohesive and immersive audio experience that supports the visual narrative.

Continuity Editing

A style of editing designed to maintain a smooth, seamless flow of action across shots, preserving spatial and temporal coherence so the audience remains absorbed in the story without noticing cuts.

Example: When cutting between two characters in a conversation, the editor uses the 180-degree rule and matched eyelines to ensure the audience always understands where each character is positioned.

Codec and Container Format

A codec (compressor-decompressor) encodes and decodes video data to reduce file size, while a container format (such as MP4, MOV, or MKV) packages the video, audio, and metadata streams together.

Example: A video file named 'interview.mp4' uses the MP4 container with H.264 video codec and AAC audio codec, providing a good balance of quality and file size for web delivery.

Frame Rate and Resolution

Frame rate is the number of individual frames displayed per second (fps), affecting motion smoothness, while resolution refers to the pixel dimensions of the video, determining image sharpness and detail.

Example: A filmmaker shoots at 24fps for a cinematic look and 4K resolution (3840x2160) for maximum detail, then exports at 1080p for online streaming platforms.

Keyframing

The technique of setting specific parameter values at defined points in time, allowing properties like position, scale, opacity, or audio volume to animate smoothly between those points.

Example: An editor keyframes a picture-in-picture overlay to start small in the corner, then smoothly scale up to full screen over two seconds as the speaker introduces a new topic.
