Cellular and Histological Foundations
1-2 weeksLearn the basic cellular components of the nervous system: neurons (types, structure, function), glial cells (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, ependymal cells, Schwann cells), synaptic transmission, and myelination. Understand basic histological staining techniques used to identify neural tissue.

Spinal Cord Anatomy and Pathways
2-3 weeksStudy the organization of the spinal cord: gray and white matter arrangement, spinal segments and dermatomes, ascending sensory pathways (dorsal column-medial lemniscus, spinothalamic tract), descending motor pathways (corticospinal tract), and spinal reflexes.
Brainstem and Cranial Nerves
2-3 weeksMaster the anatomy of the midbrain, pons, and medulla: internal organization, cranial nerve nuclei and their functions, major tracts passing through each level, and clinical brainstem syndromes (e.g., Wallenberg syndrome, Weber syndrome).
Cerebral Hemispheres and Cortical Areas
2-3 weeksStudy the surface anatomy of the brain (gyri, sulci, lobes), functional cortical areas (motor, sensory, visual, auditory, language, association), Brodmann areas, and the concept of cortical localization of function.
Diencephalon, Limbic System, and Basal Ganglia
2-3 weeksExplore the thalamus (major nuclei and their connections), hypothalamus (homeostatic functions), limbic structures (hippocampus, amygdala, cingulate gyrus), and basal ganglia circuitry (direct and indirect pathways, clinical disorders).
Cerebrovascular Anatomy and Ventricular System
1-2 weeksLearn the arterial supply of the brain (Circle of Willis, anterior/middle/posterior cerebral arteries, vertebrobasilar system), venous drainage, the ventricular system, CSF production and circulation, and meninges. Understand vascular territories and stroke syndromes.
White Matter Tracts and Connectivity
1-2 weeksStudy the major white matter pathways: projection fibers (internal capsule, corona radiata), commissural fibers (corpus callosum, anterior commissure), and association fibers (arcuate fasciculus, superior/inferior longitudinal fasciculi). Explore diffusion tensor imaging basics.
Clinical Neuroanatomy and Case Integration
2-4 weeksIntegrate all knowledge by studying clinical cases requiring lesion localization: stroke syndromes, traumatic brain injury, demyelinating diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and space-occupying lesions. Practice correlating signs and symptoms with anatomical structures.
