The process by which certain atmospheric gases (CO2, methane, water vapor, nitrous oxide) absorb and re-emit infrared radiation from Earth's surface, trapping heat in the lower atmosphere. This natural process keeps Earth about 33 degrees Celsius warmer than it would otherwise be, but human-caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations are intensifying the effect.
