School culture refers to the shared beliefs, norms, and values that shape behavior within the school, while climate is the collective perception of the school environment by students, staff, and families. Leaders shape culture through rituals, language, policies, and modeling.

A principal who establishes a tradition of publicly recognizing academic growth rather than only achievement, creating a culture where effort and improvement are valued alongside high performance.

A leadership stance that explicitly identifies and disrupts systemic inequities in access, opportunity, and outcomes across race, class, gender, language, and ability. It requires leaders to interrogate their own biases, redistribute resources, and hold the system accountable for closing opportunity gaps.

The structured process of transitioning a school or district from its current state to a desired future state. Effective change management addresses both the technical components of reform (structures, policies, schedules) and the adaptive challenges (beliefs, relationships, culture).

A principal implementing a new block schedule who anticipates resistance by first building a coalition of teacher-leaders, piloting the change with volunteers, sharing early results transparently, and adjusting the model based on feedback before full rollout.
